Neighbourhood planting initiative.
Residents initiated a plan to take over the maintenance of seven lots with a total of 350 sq m public space from the local government, and to maintain that with a group of volunteers.
I designed the borders, (plant palette was restricted by an earlier plan), set up maintenance and over the years altered the planting.
My challenge was to work with the issues we faced:
Initially very poor bad soil, lots of rabbits, people walking or driveing through the plantings, and tons of waste dumped on the planting. On another level the number of volunteers that helped out on a regular basis was too low. So I used large groups of plants with easily distinguishable features for ease of identification when weeding, with only some mixed planting on a small scale.
These are some pictures of the more successful parts.
